How do I build muscle on my legs effectively and cheaply?

there are three things to building mass

effort make sure to get the effort in. if you can walk properly after your leg workout you are not doing enough. i do one drop set to failure(true failure) lifting slowly(10 secs a rep). and need at least 5 minutes before attempting to get up.most people don't go to failure. just keep lifting untill you fail meaning you cannot move the weight anymore no matter what. if your life was on the line you should not be able to complete another rep(dont sacrifice form) and make sure to take at least 10 seconds for each rep. it reduces inertia making the workout harder and preventing injury. the whole set should take about a minute to a minute and a half at which point you fail drop the weight by 20 pounds and keep going till failure again(should only be one or 2 reps if you can do more than that you didn't do enough in the first part.

nutrition - make sure to get enough protein and calories 1g protein per pound lean weight and at least 500 calorie surplus

recovery make sure you allow enough time in-between leg workouts at least 3 days some people need at least a week.

i know this goes against what all professionals say. but let them go for a while, try to just put some meat on, eat a big meal before bed.
get a little flab on the legs, THEN work them hard, you gotta have something to turn into muscle, if you have no fat to build muscle out of, your just toning. it will take a while but it will work :]

cycling, especially up hill.
horse riding
running up and down a flight of stairs repeatedly
step aerobics especially in water. aqua step aerobics
hydrospinning

Squats, lunges, presses. Running up hill. Calf raises. Please don't be the guy with the great upper and chicken legs. <
